From Senegal to Nigeria: The Arts Block Brings African Roots and Rhythms to Greenfield

BRATTLEBORO, VT –
On Friday, May 18th Fenibo will bring their infectious Afrobeat music to the stage at The Arts Block in downtown Greenfield, MA. Opening for Fenibo will be Sana & U-tek, featuring Sana Ndiaye of the Senegalese Hip Hop band “Gokh-Bi System”. The Arts Block features a spacious dance floor, ample seating and a fine selection of beverages at their full bar. The show is open to people of all ages. Doors open at 7:30. There will be a $10.00 cover charge.
Sana & U-tek
Born in the southern region of Senegal, in the village of Djembering, Sana Ndiaye first played the ekonting as a small boy, following the tradition of the Jola people. An ancient and extremely rare three-stringed gourd instrument, the ekonting (which looks like a large banjo) is played using a technique similar to plucking a guitar. Its sound is so soothing it was historically used to bring peace to the villagers in times of unrest.
As a member of Gokh-Bi System (Neighborhood System), Sana has shared the stage with many notable performers including Damian Marley, The Last Poets, Angelique Kidjo, Culture, Toots and the Maytals and Michael Franti & Spearhead. While he remains a working member of Gokh-Bi System and continues to tour with them to spread the message of peace, love and justice, he is also currently working on solo projects highlighting the beautiful music of the ekonting and traditional vocals. Sana & U-tek will start at 8:00 pm
Fenibo
In October of 2010 the members of Fenibo held their first public show as one of 13 “Felabrations” being held across the country to honor Fela Kuti, the King of Afrobeat. Since then the Brattleboro based band has played numerous benefits, festivals, weddings and local shows honing their craft, adding new songs to their repertoire and developing their fan base.
Fenibo (which means "born on a happy day"), is a 12 piece ensemble based out of Bratleboro, VT. Their sound celebrates the traditions of Afrobeat and Afropop, playing covers of Fela Kuti as well as their own compositions. Their music weaves together Afrobeat, Funk, Jazz, Reggae and Soukous, creating an irresistible dance groove.
If you like music that celebrates a strong horn section...you'll like Fenibo!
If you like to dance, you'll love Fenibo!
Most of all, Fenibo knows how to have fun: you'll find this music to be a joyful experience, one that triggers smiles and moving bodies!
